The South African Krugerrand is arguably the world’s most popular gold bullion. Minted first in 1967 by the South Africa to market their incredible natural gold supply, the Krugerrand has been a standard for for private gold bullion ownership around the world for nearly 50 years. Although importation of the Krugerrand coin was sanctioned by many western nations in the 1970’s and 1980’s because of the South African policy of Apartheid, these sanctions were lifted when South Africa abandoned Apartheid policy in the early 1990’s.

The coin was originally minted to be used as currency; therefore it has a more durable gold alloy than most of the other gold bullion coins. The 1 oz Krugerrand contains an ounce of pure gold, but weighs 1.09 troy oz and contains .09 troy oz of copper, making it resistant to dents and scratches associated with normal wear and circulation. This alloy gives the coin a copper/orange tint, and is known as crown gold. Crown gold is also used in the making of British Gold Sovereigns.

Krugerrands have excellent world-wide liquidity, and make an excellent choice for the globally minded gold investor. The Krugerrand is stamped with “1 oz Fine Gold” in English on the face of the coin.
